ELMWOOD MEN’S
"I am privileged when individuals invite me into their inner world; when they invite me to ‘come close.’ I get to hear their hearts speak about who they love and how they want to feel about themselves, and I get to dream with them as they share their hopes for a different future."
- Chaplain Angel Hernandez
The Elmwood Men's facility houses approximately 2,600 men in medium and minimum security units. The minimum security yard, also known as 'the farm' is home to our offices and a large chapel where men can join various spiritual practices including meditation, volunteer led Christian worship, Muslim prayers and more. Chaplain Angel Hernandez and volunteers meet with men for one to one counseling by appointments and drop ins. The office houses CIC's library of spiritual books and other religious items that are shared with individuals across all facilities. In the medium units volunteers and staff lead small group studies for all faiths, host larger group worship and spiritual practices services in multipurpose rooms and counsel men one to one.
Stories from Elmwood Men’s
Seeds
On March 13th, I made my last trip into our offices in the minimum yard at Elmwood... Little did I know that these materials would become seeds of hope in the months to follow.
Ripping Off Covers
We both knew that hard bound books are not allowed to be given out in the jail, and the men knew that too. Of course a hard bound book was in that box, and of course somebody wanted it.
